This project was kindly funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund. The whole project included working with the community, research for a book and finding out all about what role the community, especially the children, played in the First World War. A large part of the project was a permanent, and continuing legacy to the Wiveliscombe community in the form of a tiled post. This celebrated the role of children in WW1, how they contributed and how the war affected them. The children in the Great War also helped look after the mules that were imported to the UK and brought onto the farms in the area. Once healthy, the mules were trained then sent to work at the front line.
The children from Wiveliscombe Primary School worked hard to create this memorial and hopefully it is something that the whole community can enjoy. Perhaps when they are adults with their own young families, they can tell the story and keep the memory alive.
We hope that this memorial will be there as a focus of commemorative events for many years to come.
